WA Registry Indexes

The Registry publishes a series of birth, death and marriage indexes listing records held in Western Australia, which are accessible for free online searching.

Free online searching

Online searching of Western Australian birth, death and marriage indexes is available for the following ranges of years:

  • Birth indexes - 1841 to 1932
  • Death indexes - 1841 to 1971
  • Marriage indexes - 1841 to 1936.

You can also purchase a certificate, using the 'order' option alongside the search result. This will open a new window with an order form in PDF format.

For full details, see How to obtain a certificate from the index or go to Searching Western Australian Online Indexes to start searching.

Searching in general

When searching indexes, a number of possible entries relating to the same name may be returned. For a fee, these registrations can be checked to see if any relate to your family tree. A copy of the correct certificate can then be obtained for the scheduled fee.

How to apply

To request certificates, use the order form option displayed in the free online searching service or complete the birth, death or marriage certificate application form.

A reduced fee applies if the event was registered more than 75 years ago and you quote the registration number, year and district*. If this index information is not quoted, the full certificate fee applies.

*Quoting of the registration district is only required for births, deaths and marriages from 1906 onwards.

Certificates are available to the public and customer evidence-of-identity is not required for births that occurred 100 years ago or more, deaths that occurred 30 years ago or more or marriages that occurred 75 years ago or more.

Certificate access conditions apply to births, deaths and marriages that occurred less than the periods stated above. See Certificate Access Policies webpage.

Note: Applications cannot be submitted by fax, email, phone or online.

Application forms can be posted with credit card details (MasterCard or Visa only) or a cheque or money order to:
